Ear reshaping (otoplasty & pinnaplasty)
Overly large or protruding ears can lead to lower self-esteem and self-consciousness. However, ear reshaping surgery is a straightforward procedure which gives people everlasting results and a renewed confidence in their appearance. It is a short surgery with an overnight stay in hospital and most people return to work one to two weeks after surgery.
What will the ear surgery procedure involve?
Your Consultant will take you through every step of the procedure before you go ahead, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Your surgeon will discuss your problems with you and offer advice on the best way to achieve the results you want.
Your ear correction surgery can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear fold and any cartilage or skin that needs to be changed will be removed or reshaped depending on the results you require. Your ear will then be held in its new position by using small stitches.
How long will it take to recover from ear surgery?
It usually only takes a couple of weeks to recover from an otoplasty.
You will need to wear a bandage for a week following surgery to keep the ears in their new position and
encourage healing. Most people return to work once the bandage has been removed, but you should avoid taking part in sporting activities for around two months.
Will Otoplasty give me scars?
Patients will have a small scar behind their ear where the surgeon made the incision, however as this is behind the ear, this will not be visible. The scar will heal over time and become the same colour as your natural skin tone.
