Gastroenterology

Consultant Gastroenterologists practising at the Hospital provide the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the stomach, bowel, liver and pancreas, colon, oesophagus (the gullet) and intestine.

Abdominal Discomfort

Cramps in the abdomen, constipation, diarrhoea and other changes to your bowel habits may be early indicators of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Changes in diet can help to reduce discomfort.

Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is a common form of cancer and and screening can identify early symptoms. Find out more here.

ERCP

We can carry out endoscopies alongside X-rays to find, diagnose and treat conditions of the pancreatic duct and bile duct, including gallstones.

Fibroscan

A fibroscan is an ultrasound of the liver that can detect inflammation and scarring. It’s a simple and painless procedure that measures your liver’s elasticity.

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disorder (GORD)

GORD occurs when stomach acid leaks into the oesophagus and causes discomfort and pain. Treatment options can include medication such as PPIs (proton-pump inhibitors). If this is not successful, keyhole surgery called Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (LNF) or the new Linx ® system can be considered.

Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy is a test that is used to investigate a range of bowel and stomach conditions including peptic ulcers, acid reflux, hiatus hernia, Barrett’s oesophagus and stomach cancer.  An endoscope (a flexible tube with a camera) is inserted into the oesophagous and stomach under sedation.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is also known as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. Treatment can alleviate and control the symptoms of IBD but surgery may be recommended in certain cases.

Indigestion

Indigestion (also known as dyspepsia) is the pain or discomfort you may feel after eating or drinking. In most cases, indigestion is mild and doesn’t happen regularly. Indigestion itself usually doesn’t require medical intervention but more severe conditions such as peptic ulcers may require treatment.

Liver Disease

There are over 100 different types of liver disease, and many different causes. We support patients with alcohol-related liver disease, a ‘fatty’ liver, and other related conditions.

Sigmoidoscopy

A sigmoidoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the rectum and bowel and is one of the most effective methods of identifying and diagnosing bowel cancer.
