Miss Sonja Cerovac

Sonja is an experienced Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon with a subspecialisation in hand and wrist surgery, appointed as a Consultant at St George’s Hospital in 2008. She was the Lead Consultant for the Department of Plastic Surgery between 2019 – 2022, a particularly difficult period for leaders in the healthcare challenged by the Covid pandemic.

Her practise involves aesthetic surgery on the face and body, hand and wrist surgery, and reconstructive surgery for skin cancer, scars and benign skin lesions. Unique skill mix has evolved from comprehensive and targeted training in renowned, subspecialist units spanning almost 15 years.

Sonja qualified from the Medical School at Belgrade University in Serbia and commenced her surgical training at a busy general and plastic surgery university centers. After moving to the UK in 1995, she completed the South London Plastic Surgery Specialist Rotation and focused her further career on cosmetic and hand surgery. Sonja was awarded a title of Master in Surgical Science for her postgraduate research thesis in the field of flexor tendon surgery from the University of London in 1999. She accomplished an aesthetic surgery fellowship at the McIndoe Surgical Centre in East Grinstead, orthopaedic wrist surgery at Wrightington Hospital in Wigan and a hand fellowship at Windsor Hand Clinic in 2008.

Sonja’s cosmetic practise is focused on operative rejuvenation of the face, breast and body, but she also offers patients non-surgical treatments with dermal fillers and botulinum toxin injections. Skin surgery, soft tissue reconstruction and scar revisions are an integral part of her practise and she welcomes prompt service for removal of skin cancers and benign skin lumps in outpatient facilities. Her NHS clinical duties are within the scope of hand and wrist surgery and looking after patients with life and limb threatening injuries and infections, as St George’s Hospital is a major trauma centre.

Due to her cross speciality training, Sonja is versatile with techniques of microsurgery as well as wrist arthroscopy (key hole surgery). She is keen to see and treat patients with acute trauma at short notice whenever possible, to avoid pitfalls in management of missed injuries and late treatments. Training of medical students and junior colleagues, research, outcome analysis and their publications are some of many facets of her dynamic practice.
