Pilates
Pilates is a mind and body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the spine. This provides patients with a unique method of exercise that focuses on correct movement quality, core stabilisation and postural correction.
We practise Modified Pilates which was developed by physiotherapists specifically for use in rehabilitation. Modified Pilates uses the traditional Pilates exercises combined with recent research on muscle physiology, muscle function and dysfunction and local and global control. This has enabled the creation of a safe, clinically effective programme for rehabilitation.
Who is Pilates for?
Pilates suits all ages and fitness levels but is particularly beneficial for:
- Back or neck pain
- Poor postures
- Sports injuries
- Post-surgical rehabilitation (including cancer treatments)
- Osteoarthritis
- Women's health problems (including ante and postnatal)
- Stress-related illnesses
- Respiratory conditions
At Parkside Hospital Physiotherapy Department we can offer group classes or one-to-one Pilates. Each participant has a one-to-one assessment either with their treating physiotherapist or the Pilates physiotherapist prior to starting the class. This is to complete a health screening, introduce you to the Pilates principles and identify your individual requirements to achieve from the class.
We run beginner and intermediate level classes as well as specific classes for people with respiratory problems and those who have been diagnosed with cancer. All participants start in a beginner level class to introduce the Pilates principles and basic level exercises. By the end of the course you will have a good understanding of the Pilates principles so you can either progress to the intermediate level class or safely continue your Pilates independently.
We allow a maximum of nine participants per class so that the instructor can ensure you are performing the exercises safely and correctly.
A course of Pilates comprises a one-hour session once a week for six weeks and must be pre-booked with a deposit to secure the place. All the instructors are chartered physiotherapists who are trained in Pilates by the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute.
