About scar revision treatment

Whether it’s the result of surgery, an accident, or perhaps a severe skin condition such as acne or measles, it can be very difficult for people to live with a visible scar. Some people find that it damages their confidence and self-esteem.

Whatever the cause, there are a number of treatment options that can have you looking and feeling more like yourself. It is, of course, important to bear in mind that while treatment can certainly help to improve the appearance of a scar, it may not be able to erase it completely.

About the procedure

There are a number of cosmetic treatment options now available that can help reduce the appearance of a scar, whilst also reducing the feelings of tightness and discomfort that scar tissue can cause. These choices range from microdermabrasion to laser therapy, to surgery – although surgery is only necessary in some cases. The first two options work by removing the top layers of your skin, allowing the skin underneath to grow back smoother so that the scar’s appearance is lessened.

Your treatment will be performed by a qualified and experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeon, in the safety of a private hospital. Treatment typically lasts between 30 minutes to one hour, and is usually performed under local anaesthetic as a day case. Of course, the exact results will differ depending on a few factors such as your age, what type of skin you have, and the type and severity of your scar.

Therefore, it’s important that you have realistic expectations before undergoing any treatment as a particular procedure cannot guarantee complete scar removal. One of our specialists will speak with you beforehand to discuss the procedure and what effect it is likely to have for you. And as with any cosmetic treatment, your specialist will also explain what potential risks are involved.
