Hypertension

Hypertension or high blood pressure is the most common chronic medical condition affecting 1 in 4 subjects in the UK. It is sometimes termed the “Silent Killer” as the condition does not cause any symptoms and can only be detected by measuring blood pressure in clinic or by 24hour ambulatory monitoring.

Importance of hypertension

Hypertension is an important risk factor for strokes, heart attacks, angina, heart failure, renal failure, aortic disease, arterial disease, atrial fibrillation, and dementia.  Proper treatment and control of hypertension can prevent all these complications.

Causes of Hypertension

The majority of patients with high blood pressure have primary hypertension where no cause can be found. However, in a significant number of patients a secondary cause can be found with proper investigations. Secondary hypertension is potentially curable relieving the need for life-long treatment with tablets.
