Gastric Banding

This page will provide you with information about gastric banding. For further details, please speak to your consultant.

What is gastric banding?

Gastric banding (also known as lap banding) is a popular weight loss procedure that causes the individual to feel full even after eating only small meals. This effect is achieved by restricting the stomach’s capacity to hold food with a form of a restrictive band. This means you eat less and lose weight as a result.

What are the benefits of gastric banding?

There are a number of reasons to choose gastric band surgery. These include:

  • If you struggle to lose a significant amount of weight from dieting or exercise
  • Have a BMI of over 40, and are classed as morbidly obese
  • Have a BMI of 30-40 and another underlying health issue, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease

What will happen during the operation?

The procedure works by placing an adjustable band around the stomach, splitting it into two sections. A small opening is left between the two, allowing food to slowly move from the upper to the lower portion of the stomach. As this creates a smaller space for food than in a non-banded stomach, the patient will feel fuller after consuming less. The food continues into the digestive tract as normal once it has passed through both stomach sections.

The band can be adjusted at a later date by a consultant depending on how much weight is being lost and how quickly. Fluid is used to tighten the band, known as a ‘band fill.’

Risks and complications

Any risks or complications will be discussed in advance of your treatment with your expert consultant.

Recovery

The recovery process for gastric band surgery usually results in only one night in hospital – in some cases patients can return home the same day.
