 What is Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Germany. After suffering from various physical ailments he was able to overcome his physical limitations with vigorous exercise regimes from an early age. His first Pilates studio was in New York where he developed the current Pilates method which soon became popular in the elite New York dance community. After his death in 1967, at the age of 87, a number of students of Pilates continued his legacy. Pilates is a mind and body conditioning exercise programme that targets the deep postural muscles of the spine. This provides patients with a unique method of exercise that focuses on correct movement quality, core stabilisation and postural correction. We practise Modified Pilates which was developed by physiotherapists specifically for use in the rehabilitation setting. Modified Pilates uses the traditional Pilates exercises combined with recent research on muscle physiology, muscle function and dysfunction and local and global control. This has enabled the creation of a safe, clinically effective programme for rehabilitation.

Who is Pilates for?
  • Back or neck pain
  • Poor postures
  • Sports injuries
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Women's health problems (including ante and postnatal)
  • Stress-related illnesses

What classes do we offer at Parkside Hospital?
At Parkside Hospital Physiotherapy Department we offer group classes for our patients or those referred by another physiotherapist or doctor specifically for Pilates. You are also able to attend without a referral if you feel Pilates may be of benefit to you.

Each participant has a one-to-one assessment either with their treating physiotherapist or the Pilates physiotherapist prior to starting the class. This is to complete a health screening, introduce you to the Pilates principles and identify your individual requirements to achieve the most from the class.

We run beginner and intermediate level classes. All participants start in a beginner level class to introduce the Pilates principles and basic level exercises. By the end of the course you will have a good understanding of the Pilates principles so you can either progress to the intermediate level class or safely continue your Pilates independently.

The intermediate class is for those who have completed at least one course of beginner level Pilates here at Parkside. It includes higher level exercises which further challenge your core strength and control.

We allow a maximum of eight participants per class so that the instructor can ensure you are performing the exercises safely and correctly.

The course comprises a one hour session once a week for six weeks. You must book a block of six weeks with a deposit to secure your place.

The charge for the classes can be invoiced to your insurance company or paid directly by you. This is charged after your first class.

The programmes are run by Chartered Physiotherapists trained in Pilates by the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute.
