Prof David Spalton is a Consultant at St Thomas' Hospital. He has a special interest in cataract surgery and intraocular lens problems and has made major contributions to the research and design of intraocular lenses which was acknowledged when he was awarded the Ridley Medal Lecture by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, their highest accolade, in 2010. He is Past President of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and one of the 12 elected Board Members of the ESCRS. His textbook 'An Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology' won the prize for the Best Medical Textbook of the Year for its first edition in 1985 and again for the 3rd edition in 2005, a unique accomplishment in medical publishing. It is now available in 10 languages and cited as one of the 100 most important ophthalmic books of the 20th century. He consults and operates both at the Parkside Hospital and King Edward VII Hospital, London.
