Mr Bernard MD FRCS (EdTr & Orth) graduated from Glasgow University Faculty of Medicine in 1990. He trained in Orthopaedic Surgery both in Sheffield and at St George’s Hospital in London. His research fellowship in Sheffield led to a thesis in the assessment of osteoporotic fracture, and the award of his Doctorate degree (MD).
He has completed Specialist Training for Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in 2003. A year spent at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital 2002-2003 was accredited for training in Specialist Spinal Surgery by the Specialist Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Surgeons.
He was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to St George’s Hospital in 2004, and has developed the Spinal Surgery service there. This has included a recent expansion to include a further Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Nurse Specialist to the department’s Spinal portfolio. The year 2009 saw the start of a successful new venture at SWLEOC (the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre) with Mr Bernard introducing Spinal Surgery there. There are now 3, and soon to be 5, Spinal Surgeons working there; this is sure to make this centre one of the largest providers of Spinal Surgery in London.
At St George’s Hospital he treats a wide range of spinal diseases, ranging from the simplest disc problems to very complex cancer and scoliosis surgeries. He has introduced disc replacement for both the lumbar and cervical spine, anterior lumbar fusions and percutaneous Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty. He has convened and taught courses on vertebroplasty both at St George’s Hospital and the Surgical Training Centre in Newcastle. He is co-chair of the committee for implementation of NICE guidelines on Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression for St George’s Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital. He is responsible for Clinical Governance in the Orthopaedic Surgery department at St George’s Hospital.
