About

Miss Shamim Umarji is a highly skilled leading Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises exclusively in hand and wrist surgery.

She qualified from Oxford University in 1996 and trained at Cambridge University, Bristol and the St George’s registrar program in London. She undertook super specialist hand and wrist fellowships at the Windsor Hand Clinic under David Evans, and at the premier specialist plastics hand unit in Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead.

She was appointed as Consultant at St George’s Hospital, one of Europe’s leading teaching hospitals and a major trauma centre, in 2008. At St George’s, Miss Umarji is Clinical Director for Surgery. Miss Umarji takes a holistic approach to treating her patients. Hand and wrist problems can be debilitating and hold people back from leading fully active lives.

She works with her patients to identify the best course of treatment taking into account the risks, the patient’s general health and their lifestyle. Her research interests include Dupuytren’s Disease – she is the Principal Investigator of a national multi-centre trial exploring non-surgical treatments such as collagenase / Xiapex for Dupuytren’s), the use of virtual reality during wide awake surgery and arthritis of the hand.

Miss Umarji is involved in teaching and training of the next generation of doctors and has been Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She is a keen sportswoman, having played rugby and cricket for Oxford University, MCC and England age group teams. She lives in Wimbledon with her family, is an active member of Wimbledon RFC and The Wimbledon Club and her children attend local schools.
